About this service
Description
Getting an early diagnosis of HIV is important to start the treatment early and take steps to prevent the virus from spreading to others. The HIV Rapid test comprises of drawing a small amount of blood (normally via finger prick) with three possible results; negative, reactive and invalid. These results are directional in nature and need to be sent to a laboratory for confirmation.
- Negative – HIV antibodies not detected in the sample. It is important to note that samples within the HIV window period might return a negative test result too.
- Reactive – HIV antibodies detected in the sample, but the result needs to be vindicated with a laboratory-based blood test.
- Invalid – This unlikely scenario simply indicates that something went wrong with the test itself. This is not an indication of the person’s HIV status and the next step is a repeat rapid HIV test.
There is no special preparation required for this test.
Overview of the HIV Test
There are three types of HIV tests: antibody tests, antigen/antibody tests, and nucleic acid tests (NAT). Antibody tests look for antibodies to HIV in a person’s blood or oral fluid. Antibody testscan take 23 to 90 days to detect HIV after exposure.
