Overview of the Prolactin Test
A prolactin test is used to determine an individual’s prolactin levels. Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland near the base of the brain. Prolactin boosts breast development and milk production during pregnancy and after birth. Prolactin levels in pregnant women and new mothers are commonly high. Low prolactin levels are generally considered normal in non-pregnant women and men.
When prolactin levels are higher than the normal range, it usually indicates the presence of a pituitary gland tumour called a prolactinoma. High prolactin can lead non-pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as men, to produce breast milk. While in women, having too much prolactin can lead to menstruation problems and infertility, it can cause erectile dysfunction and decreased sex drive in men.
